Objective:

The main objective of IGASS is to advance the care of patients with spinal disorders. The general idea behind the organization is to provide a wide and open forum for exchange of ideas in the area of spine science. The free interchange of ideas originating from any discipline involved in spinal research or treatment of spinal disorders is the spirit that characterizes IGASS. Since improvements in treatment to a large extent are based on knowledge of etiology and pathogenesis, not only clinical science but also basic science and rehabilitation are within the areas of interest of the group.

IGASS was formed by a group of European spine surgeons. The philosophy of the group is based on the clear understanding that advancement of spinal care presupposes wide collaboration between many fields of research and clinical experiences. Treatment can be improved only by combining basic science, evidence based medicine and the experience of the large community of providers of surgical and conservative care of the individual patient with a spinal disorder.

The modus operandi of IGASS is international educational meetings for presentation of new scientific data as well as case presentations. Annually one day symposia are held in connection with the Euro Spine meeting. Recurrent cadaver surgical workshops are to be held in Geneva, Switzerland. To improve global collaboration and to facilitate the development of spinal care in the non-western medical world spinal symposia’s are planned in African countries, the Middle East, the Far East and in South America. Fellowships including short, middle and long term stays at international centers for spine surgery are organized by the IGASS.
